EDUCATION
The first
schools in Alaska were established by Russians during the 1820s, but
the school system did not expand significantly until the region was
organized as a U.S. territory in 1912. Education in Alaska is largely
state-funded (and thus local school districts suffer cutbacks when state
oil royalties drop).
The University
of Alaska (1917) has upper-level campuses at Anchorage, Fairbanks, and
Juneau and a network of branch campuses and education centers. Sheldon
Jackson College (1878) was Alaska 's first institution of higher learning.
