ECONOMY
Concerted
economic growth in Alaska began only during World War II, when the federal
government established several important military bases in the territory.
The state now is the major employer in Alaska, and the state's income
is based on taxes and royalties from petroleum production. The state
suffered from the drop in world oil prices during the mid- and later
1980s (it was estimated that the state lost $150 million in income for
every $1 drop in the price of a barrel of crude oil). Alaska continues
nonetheless to produce a very significant percentage of U.S. oil, and
the oil industry is crucial to the state's economy. Providing much less
income than oil but also important are such traditional industries as
lumbering, fishing, and tourism.
