MINERAL RESOURCES

The most valuable mineral deposits in Alaska are petroleum and natural gas, found in great quantities in the Arctic coastal plain (especially around PRUDHOE BAY) and in lesser but significant amounts on the Kenai Peninsula and in Cook Inlet and the Gulf of Alaska. Gold is found in the central Yukon River basin, on the southern Seward Peninsula, and in the Alaska Panhandle. Alaska contains one of North America's largest bituminous coal reserves, located in Cook Inlet, the Nenana area, along the Yukon, and in northwest Alaska. Other minerals include iron ore, copper, molybdenum, antimony, silver, platinum, tin, and mercury.
